Custom Jewellery Design Process FAQ

There are generally two reasons for purchasing an Australian pink diamond:

  1. You are looking for a solid, reliable investment that is almost guaranteed to perform well, or
  2. You intend on having it mounted into a beautiful piece of jewellery.

Of course, there are those who purchase an Australian pink diamond for both reasons. To some, it can seem a waste to invest in an Australian pink diamond and keep it tucked away in a safe – particularly if you’re planning on keeping the stone long term and you have no intention of selling it, perhaps with the intention of it becoming a priceless heirloom,.

If you’re looking to mount your investment Australian pink diamond in a truly special piece of fine jewellery, having likely gone to such a great deal of expense to it, it makes sense to have a master jeweller produce a custom design that will perfectly suit both your stone and the person on whom the finished piece will be bestowed. Your diamond can be worked into a one-of-a-kind engagement ring, a stunning cocktail ring, a high-end brooch, pendant or set of earrings.

The possibilities are huge, but, for those unfamiliar with the custom jewellery design process, we’ve put together a brief rundown of how the process works and answered some frequently asked questions below.

How is custom jewellery designed?

How is custom jewellery designed?

When you contact a jewellery designer to commission a piece of custom jewellery, you will discuss your custom jewellery needs, including:

  • The size and shape of the stone you have or the stone you would like to acquire. (Argyle Diamond Investments’ diamond specialists can assist you to procure the perfect stones or stone for your custom designed piece).
  • The type of jewellery you want your stone (or stones) set into.
  • The recipient of the piece.
  • The frequency with which it will be worn
  • Your budget.
  • The production timeframe that needs to be adhered to.
  • Any other preferences or requirements you might have.

How is custom jewellery made?

Your jewellery designer may ask you to send them pictures or sketches of designs you have seen or styles that you like, to use as inspiration for your custom piece. Your jewellery designer will take the design inspiration and requests you have given them, and produce a series of sketches, keeping your budget in mind.

Depending on the production process your jeweller uses, your piece may be fabricated entirely by hand, by forming wire from ingots, or:

  • by hand carving a wax model of your piece, or
  • by using CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and/or computer-aided manufacturing) to create a 3D virtual model that can be used to create a 3D printed wax model.

Once the design has been finalised and approved the wax model is used to cast the final piece, which is then hand finished and set with your chosen stone/s.

Can custom jewellery be designed without meeting the designer in person?

Yes. Custom jewellery design can be completed without meeting the designer face-to-face. Through drawings, 3D virtual designs, Zoom or FaceTime meetings and emails, your jewellery designer can work with you to design a piece to suit you and your stone, to produce exactly the piece you had envisioned.

How long does custom jewellery design take?

How long does custom jewellery design take?

From the first design discussion to getting the finished piece, the length of time it will take to craft your piece, or pieces, depends on the intricacy of the design and the ease and speed with which your jewellery designer is able to arrange design conferences with you.

The more difficult it is for you and your jewellery designer to contact each other to ask questions and receive a response, the longer the design phase will take. The more intricate or complex the chosen design, the longer it will take to craft your piece.

The length of time taken to produce your jewellery will also depend upon whether your piece is to be crafted entirely by hand, or whether the designer will use CAD/CAM and wax moulds to produce the item. CAD/CAM is often used when a design is more complex than what the jeweller can effectively and efficiently carve by hand in wax.

What if I don’t know what I want?

No problem! It isn’t necessary for you to have any idea about Australian pink diamonds, fine jewellery, or jewellery design – that’s your jewellery designer’s job! Many people don’t know exactly what they want, or have a great understanding of the durability, wearability and practicality of the metals, stones, and styles available, or those that they like. Even those who have a very clear idea of the type of design they want often change their design a little once they find out more about what is possible and what won’t work well.

It is your jewellery designer’s job to work through any issues with you, provide you with advice on which precious metals and design styles will best suit or work best with your stone, and help you get the best result possible from your custom jewellery design project.
